How Can I Save on My Utility Costs?

There are several things you can do around the house to help save you money on your utility bills.

Turn off unnecessary appliances/lights when you are away from home.

You should always turn off all lights and appliances when you are not using them.  This will help you save money and energy.

When you decide to replace heating/cooling components, upgrade to higher efficiency equipment.

You should always replace your new heating/cooling components with the highest efficiency equipment that fits your budget.  This will lower your utility bill.  Efficiency of the equipment is like miles per gallon on a car, the higher the SEER rating, the lower cost to operate the system.

Use ceiling fans in conjunction with your heating and air conditioning system.

Using ceiling fans in your home can help circulate air around your home.  This will keep airflow moving over your skin, which will make you feel cooler.  Also, in the winter, ceiling fans can be used to help circulate the warmer air.  Since heat rises, using a ceiling fan in the winter will help push down the warmer air in taller rooms of your home.

Install compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Fluorescent light bulbs use less energy and put off less heat in your home, which will reduce the load on your cooling system.
